2024 marked the first time an organization using the Impact Suite secured 100% reimbursement of Impact Suite license fees from AmeriCorps via "Disability Accommodation Off Set" funds.
From what we understand, the Impact Suite is the only AmeriCorps-aligned one-stop platform that is friendly for people using screen readers. As such, from what we're observing, AmeriCorps will provide funding to help organizations purchase our platform and other tools that allow individuals with disabilities to serve.
The 2024 form is attached to this article and needs to be submitted to accommodations@americorps.gov. The window for application submission opens on October 7, 2024.
Retroactive Reimbursement Seems to be Possible in Some Cases:
One program that applied for funds to cover 2024-25 also received 100% reimbursement for 2023-24 as well! We're not 100% clear on all of the details that led to this happening, so check in with your program officer or with AmeriCorps on this possibility.
If your program operations under a commission...
Your application has to be submitted by the commission.
If your program is a National Direct...
You can submit the application directly to AmeriCorps.
We're admittedly not experts in all of the intricacies of this application process, so definitely connect with your commission or AmeriCorps program officer with any questions you have.
Sample Language that Has Been Used Successfully:
Here's some of the language that was incorporated into the application of an organization that recouped 100% of their funds. All of the organization's members have visual impairments to some degree.
OnCorps timesheets are currently inaccessible to AmeriCorps members who are blind or visually impaired, as the platform does not support screen readers or other accessibility software. Cell phones, which are highly accessible devices, enable individuals with visual impairments to navigate software and the internet effectively through apps. However, at the start of the 2023-2024 program year, OnCorps did not offer an app that allowed members to independently complete their timesheets.
In contrast, the America Learns platform was designed with full accessibility in mind. Both its app and website are fully compatible with screen readers and other accessibility tools, allowing members who are blind or visually impaired to independently complete their timesheets, as well as read and sign required documents, including Member Service Agreements, Position Descriptions, and evaluations. By providing this accommodation, we ensure that all members can achieve full participation in their service assignments, creating an inclusive environment where every member can contribute effectively and independently.
