What is Display Logic?

With Display Logic, you can now add (or remove) questions on a form based on how someone answered a previous question. This means you’re in control of what questions appear, only showing what’s relevant to each reporter’s responses.

We’re rolling out this feature in waves, starting with single-select questions (the ones where users pick just one answer).

Here are some examples of how you might use Display Logic:

  • AmeriCorps Members Tutoring Students: If an AmeriCorps member selects "After-School Program" when asked where they primarily tutor students, Display Logic can add a follow-up question asking about the grade levels of the students they work with. If they select "In-School Program," they might instead see a question asking how many classrooms or teachers they support.

  • Adult Literacy Tutors: If a tutor selects "Reading Comprehension" as the primary skill they are helping an adult learner improve, Display Logic can add a question asking which types of reading materials they use, such as books, newspapers, or digital texts. If they select "Writing Skills," they might be asked how often they provide feedback on written assignments.

Current Limitations of Display Logic

As we roll out the first wave of Display Logic, there are a couple important things to keep in mind.

Group Questions

  • One key limitation is related to how Display Logic interacts with Group questions in the Impact Suite.

In the Impact Suite, clients can create Groups, which typically represent the beneficiaries of their programs (like students, adult learners, etc.). Within these Groups, clients add Identifiers to track and manage these individuals. When a client creates a Group question, that question is duplicated for each Identifier selected by the reporter (such as for each student or learner).

While you won’t be able to use non-Group questions to trigger Group-related questions in this first phase, you can use Display Logic within your Group questions. This means that you can control which questions appear or don’t appear for each Identifier based on their responses within the Group.

Longitudinal Goal Tracking Questions (Roles & Goals)

  • Another limitation is related to the Longitudinal Goal Tracking questions.

In this first wave, you will not be able to use a single-select question to add or remove this type of questions. You will be able to do this in future waves of the release.

We’re continuously working to expand these features, so keep an eye out for future updates!

Setting Up Display Logic

Once you've created questions and assemble them into a form, you'll be able to add (and edit) Display Logic. You can do this for any form that has at least one single-select qualitative questions (and does not bump up against the two limitations listed above). Let's review the three ways you can introduce Display Logic:

  • Adding Display Logic When Creating a New Form
  • Adding or Editing Display Logic on an Already Created Form

Adding Display Logic When Creating a New Form

  1. Once you are happy with the order of your questions and if you have any questions for which logic may be applied, click Add Optional Display Logic.
  2.  Use the Add Logic links to add or hide subsequent questions in your form based on your reporter's responses.
  3. A pop-up window will appear.
